INFORMATION
What is the Office of the Public Defender (OPD)?
The Public Defender is appointed by the courts of San Andreas when an individual is not able to afford an attorney or when an attorney is not available to them at the time of their request. A Public Defender should be available to individuals during police questioning or after their conviction, regardless of their ability to pay for a private attorney.

The Office of the Public Defender provides legal representation in the areas of criminal, misdemeanor, juvenile justice, child protection, paternity, appeals, post-conviction and traffic cases.

Our mission statement is to protect the fundamental rights, liberties and dignity of each person whose case has been entrusted to us by providing the finest legal representation.

Can I still work in private practice?
The short answer is yes. So long as your practice doesn't interfere with your job you can still participate in your own practice or firm. Public Defenders are here to represent the indigent clients who cannot afford an attorney.

DIVISIONS

Criminal Division
The OPD Criminal Division provides direct representation to all clients facing criminal charges or clients who have already been convicted of an offense. This Division constitutes the bulk of OPD operations and is further subdivided into several units which bring together attorneys depending on their skill level and experience; Early Representation Unit,Trial Unit and Serious Crime Unit.

Civil Division
The OPD Civil Division is part of an experimental program to offer free legal representation to low-income individuals and families in a select number of civil matters such as consumer, civil rights, immigration, employment, family and housing and public benefits. For more information about this program and its eligibility requirements, please contact the OPD.
